The four volume of the Great Divide covers the following chapters:
The Chapter on emission of semen. It deals with the case when a bhikkhu on probation commits an additional fault.
The Chapter on the resolution of legal issues. Explanation of the seven rules for resolving disputes.
The Chapter on minor issues.
Chapters on accommodations.
The Chapter on the schism in the Sangha. It begins with the story of Devadatta inviting an elderly Buddha to retire and appointing him in his place; when the Buddha rejects him, calling him a miserable shit-eater, he makes three attempts to assassinate the Buddha. Failing to do so, he comes up with the idea of imposing much stricter practices, including vegetarianism, on the bhikkhus. When this is rejected, Devadatta leads a schism that ultimately fails.
The Chapter on Cancellation of Recitation of the Code of Dicipline. A bhikkhu may suspend recitation if a bhikkhu with unconfessed faults is present.
The Chapter on the bhikkhunīs. The Buddha agrees to establish an order of bhikkhunīs, but warns that it will weaken the teaching and shorten its lifespan, and imposes some rules organizing the Sangha of the bhikkhunīs.
The Chapter on the Council of Five Hundred. Shortly after the Buddha's death, Kassapa organizes a council in which the teachings are recited; Upāli answers questions on the Vinaya and Ananda on the Dhamma. As a consequence, a schism occurs in the Sangha, as bhikkhus who did not attend refuse to accept the outcome of the Council and prefer what the Buddha had said.

The Chapter on the Council of the Seven Hundred. A century later, a dispute arises on several points, mainly on the acceptance of gold and silver; another council is held which agrees on the prohibition, after receiving the advice of an elderly pupil of Ānanda
